Our Temple was started in Berkeley over ninety years ago by Issei (first generation) pioneers from Japan. Though today we are still enjoying the ethnic traditions that they brought to our American shores, we are experiencing the exciting beginnings of broadening our ethnic/racial base to include a multi-culturalism that can enhance and deepen our understanding of our Jodo-Shinshu Buddhist religious understanding and faith.
Our present resident minister is Reverend David Matsumoto.
Our ordinary Sunday program consists of a Dharma Family Service at 9:30 A.M. Once a month a Shotsuki Hoyo (Monthly Memorial Service) is held at 1:00 P.M. unless combined with one of our special services.
Our Dharma School (Sunday School) has classes from preschool through high school. Our teachers will be more than happy to discuss with you the appropriate level of spiritual enrichment for your child, should this area be of interest to you.
Other religious programs include: Sunday Adult Dharma Discussions, periodic Dharma Study Sessions, Meditation Sittings, et. al. Our temple also offers Buddhist books for sale (on display in the lobby).
All in all, whenever you come to our temple, please don't hesitate to ask someone for information. We are here to assist you with whatever level of participation you may be seeking. If, by chance, you are here to satisfy a slight interest rather than to make a more personal connection, we wish you well and hope that you will be visiting us again soon.
